Hornbeam Forest— Carpinus laxiflora

This wonderful composition is in its fifteenth year, possibly longer— originally styled individually, these three trees are now fused for eternity, having bound themselves to one another for support over decades. This is an unusual soft-leaved variety of hornbeam from southern Europe, with long racemes of soft yellow drooping flowers followed by catkins, and bright serrated foliage that takes on autumn gold.
Vigorous and yet dainty, the grove has been reduced to approximately twelve inches tall, and presented in an exotic Chinese carved stoneware oval for a permanent home.
