This winter represents the start of my second decade in business. I am celebrating having introduced the art and practice of bonsai to over five hundred students in that timeframe, including two classes this past month.
The specialty I am currently exploring is using camellias and azaleas for bonsai, with the reward that flowers occur out of the usual spring season. This example has bloomed from Thanksgiving to the present almost continuously. A personal favorite for its delicate and scented blossoms, it has exceeded my hopes. Another plant that has surprised me is an azalea variety that has presented flowers in mid winter— despite its noted bloom time being May, or “fifth month”, hence the name “Satsuki” in Japanese. My joy in these unexpected rewards is unbounded— as the plants reward me for being by opening their hearts… or so it would seem.
Visitors are welcome, even in the bleak months when rain is ever present.
