European Beech looks grand in all seasons.
This small specimen of Fagus sylvatica, or European Beech, was grown as pre-bonsai on a tile field, giving a wide and shallow rootball ideal for a small container. Wonderful layered branching habit accents the wide horzontal reach of her airy limbs, and leaves deeply ribbed and serrated heighten the drama. A smooth trunk grows almost glistening grey as this species ages, with mottling of the bark as the sign of a truly ancient tree. At ten years, this specimen is just beginning to show the characteristic silver grey outer bark and wide reach of the species. Glorious golden fall foliage completes the picture, aging to bronze leaf color which will hold on the boughs till spring growth emerges. Container by Larry Bruning of Bruning Studios. Not For Sale
