Australian Tree Fern

This native fern from Tasmania— the island closest to Antarctica!—is known for its woody trunk, and attains a height of fifteen or twenty feet in its native habitat in the coastal rainforest. Not fully Hardy in the Pacific Northwest, nevertheless it has become a featured garden plant, which can be seen wrapped in bubble wrap in Mediterranean style gardens locally. I prefer to give it winter protection, and enjoy evergreen fronds. New foliage emerges as fiddleheads, developing the softest and finest of filigree fronds in vivid green. This specimen is presented in the last of my original Bruning pots, made by Snohomish master potter Larry Bruning,
